Catholic Ministry to Youth and Young Adults

Every diocese can have a Coordinator of Ministry to Youth and Young Adults who will assist and train parish youth leaders and evaluate youth programs throughout the diocese.  The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has established guidelines to promote youth ministry in the diocese.

I heard of this while watching EWTN Life on the Rock on June 13.  My bishop was one of the guests on the program.  (watch the online)  Young college students on the program are so enthused about their faith.

Please share about what is happening in your parish in regard to a trained Youth Minister.  The USCCB can provide ideas to make this possible for your teens and young adults.

This is the type of material that builds us all up, and is what we need.

Congratulations and thanks.

God bless,

I have 'somewhat' recently been a member of a young adult group in florida.  being 33 I fall on the upper edge of the 18 - 35 age bracket to be considered a young adult.

It has been a wonderful expierence as I have met many faithful catholics and this has helped restore my faith in the church as an institution.

As , such I know we have a diacean youth/ young adult co-oridnator and I know the parish has a youth minister, but I have not really run across people trained in young adult minestry at either of the two parish where I was involved in starting young adult groups.  I think the youth side had the most emphisis put on it first and the young adult side of it is growing a little more slowly but not in a shabby way either.

My daughter has been turned off by overly-religious kids at her college. I did not expect this. I thought devout Catholicism would make her comfortable.

Their devotions and piety come across to her as demonstrations in a contest to be a better Catholic than others.

This is obviously something for her [and me as her dad] to work through, but I thought I'd mention it as a possible danger in this topic.

In striving for true holiness we must be aware of the possiblity of slipping into Phariseeism.

You might also want to remind your daughter that we are all sinners.

Some people sin by presuming to much , some people sin by presuming too little.

"A just man sins 50 times a day and a wicked man sins 5000 times a day."

"he who sayeth he is without sin is a liar"

Sorrry I don't have time to look up the passages.

Thanks Noel Fitz for your encouragement.

fishman, Your diocese and parish is fortunate to have a Youth and Young Adult Ministry program that is growing.

Protect the Rock, I’m sorry that your daughter didn’t have a good experience with a college youth group.  Thanks for sharing this.  Young adults need the care and support of the diocese to help form a better program.  Someone who will listen to their concerns.

I continue to search and inquire for more information about Youth and Young Adult Ministries that are in accordance with the guidelines established by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

I found that at least two things are necessary:

1) Diocesan Youth Commission (Committee?) that oversees the program with the bishop.

2) A Coordinator of Ministry to Youth and Young Adults with the responsibility to promote a comprehensive approach to youth ministry in the diocese, in accordance with the guidelines established by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.  Assist and train parish youth leaders in establishing and evaluating youth programs and provide support services to the Diocesan Youth Commission.

The Coordinator of Ministry to Youth and Young Adults should have a strong background and experience in youth ministry; excellent communications and leadership skills; good organizational and computer skills; ability to relate to youth, young adults and adult youth ministers; dependable and able to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.  College degree or certification in youth ministry preferred.  Practicing Roman Catholic in good standing with the church.

Let your priest know that you are supportive of a parish youth program that follows the guidelines established by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

May the peace of Christ be with you.
