Sacraments and the Parousia

In a previous post, GK stated that, " there will be no need of Sacraments because we will be in the presence of God." While my soul longs for that day, and my mind perceives such with a certain amount of trepidation, I can not grasp 1 billion or even 1 million people in the "presence of God" save the Eucharist.

I have made sacrifices that I offer with the most Holy sacrifice of Jesus so that I may be worthy of paricipation in the "wedding feast of the Lamb." I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that He suffered, died and rose for the salvation of man. To dine at table with my Lord is paramount to my existence here in this world. I have studied much and seek further understanding via confession, my marriage, the children that we have been blessed with, Communion and prayer.

Isaiah prophesies, "Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse,
And a branch from his roots will bear fruit.
The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him,
The spirit of wisdom and understanding,
The spirit of counsel and strength,
The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.
And He will delight in the fear of the LORD,
And He will not judge by what His eyes see,
         Nor make a decision by what His ears hear;
But with righteousness He will judge the poor,
         And decide with fairness for the afflicted of the earth;
And He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth,
And with the breath of His lips He will slay the wicked.
Also righteousness will be the belt about His loins,
And faithfulness the belt about His waist.
And the wolf will dwell with the lamb,
And the leopard will lie down with the young goat,
         And the calf and the young lion and the fatling together;
And a little boy will lead them.
Also the cow and the bear will graze,
Their young will lie down together,
And the lion will eat straw like the ox.
The nursing child will play by the hole of the cobra,
And the weaned child will put his hand on the viper's den.
They will not hurt or destroy in all My holy mountain,
For the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD
As the waters cover the sea.
    Then in that day
The nations will resort to the root of Jesse,
         Who will stand as a signal for the peoples;
And His resting place will be glorious.

Is 11:1-10 NASB

Jesus says, "...but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; for they cannot even die anymore, because they are like angels, and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection." Lk 20:35-36 NASB

Again Jesus says, "Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." Rev 21:3-4

Finally: Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever. The angel said to me, "These words are trustworthy and true. The Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, sent his angel to show his servants the things that must soon take place." Rev 22:1-6 NASB

So I pose this question, what will life be for those who will dwell in that glorious city; the new Jerusalem? Forever.

" I can not grasp 1 billion or even 1 million people in the "presence of God" save the Eucharist." --

That is because you are trying to use your imagination which is limited to understanding those things you have expierenced.

"eye has not seen, ear has not heard, what God has ready for those who love him".

The word 'sacrament' means sign ... all signs will pass away and be replaced with the real thing.  We will, of coarse, still make communion with christ , but what we now do finitely and imperfectly we will then do perfectly and as infinately as his grace will allow.

Our communion with him in the parusia will make our communion with him now seem like a shadow in respect to how real it will be.

I am bummed by the fact that we will not need sacraments in God's Heaven.  They are all that I have here that will bring me to God's true love.

Will the "fullfilment" of the sacrament of marriage be uniting with "all" or God or something that makes marriage seem lame by comparison, without crushing marriage?  But, like you DTG, I do not look forward to when I will not be sacramentally married to my one and only love.  I wonder what will happen with my kids, my brothers, my sisters, my mom, my dad ... will we no longer be family?  Will it be more than family?  Will family truly be all or Catholic or universe?

I want to stay with the familiar, yet God wants me to die to all.  Darn it!

Haveing recently had a child I found myself contemplating this.

if we were to examine our enviourment in the womb and consider ourselves we might easily conclude that we do not want to be born.

after all we have what we need.  we understand the usefulness of our eyes , our legs are good for swimming and we use them for that.  Not quite sure what finger nails are for but all is safe and warm so what does it matter.

Is not wanting to die kind of like not wanting to be born?

Well our eyes still do what they used to but also see in a new way ?

deep thoughts... no answers...

gk - I believe it will be true family. Love of all will be understood to its fullest. With my finite mind, however, I just can't get past the need for Christ in the Eucharist, the Bread of Life in this world and the next...

If I am not mistaken, Christ will STILL be offering his life for us - even in Heaven.  That IS the Mass here on earth - the resurrected Christ continually offering himself in Heaven.  We just won't need to partake of it here on earth under the species of bread and wine.  The New Jerusalem will be complete.

fishman - I greatly desire to die and enter into life. My trepidation lies with my knowledge of not being ready to enter into that life given my present sinful state.

There will be a new Jerusalem, a City where God is present as Ruler forever. My question asks, "what will we do; how will we pay homage to the Maker of all things? How will we interact with the angels? Will we be angels?

I know no one has the answer, I'm just prying for people's imagination or expectations.

lpioch - agreed, but what of eternal life after the judgemnent of mankind and the placement of the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, within the new heaven and the new earth?

Do you offer that the New Jerusalem is completed upon one's own death? That the room that Jesus has prepared for those worthy of eternal life will be available before the judgement day?

No...the New Jerusalem IS complete in Heaven (remember...time does not affect Heaven) - and will be completed on earth upon the 2nd coming of Christ.  However, the Eucharist brings to earth NOW the Heavenly Jerusalem.

Also, i belive the book of revelations is an attempt to answer your question.  The mass is forever and eternal and there is only one mass.

All masses are a type of that single mass a realization of that type in heaven we will participate in the real deal

lpioch and fishman - yes and yes, Mass is heaven on earth and it is eternal and one. So what will Mass be like after the Parousia? The worship of God and His Son's sacrifice witnessed by the Holy Spirit. We will surely have song, " Holy! Holy! Holy!", "Gloria, Gloria in excelsis Deo!" but will we have Scripture readings and the Eucharist?

So, lpioch, do we enter the New Jerusalem after we are purified and made holy or do we await the Parousia and God's Justice and the descent of the new Jerusalem to the new earth?

fishman - what is the real deal? and how will we be participants?

David,

I am convinced that "time" and all discussions here relating to "time" hinder what reality and Truth are.  "after" "before" whatever they may be.

When we are purified and made holy, we will experience the New Jerusalem in ITS completeness.

However, until the Parousia, when the New Jerusalem is in its completeness ON EARTH, WE cannot completely experience the New Jersusalem.  Because we are human - both matter and spirit - we are not complete until we have both.

These are my own words, given what I understand our teachings to be.  I could easily be proven wrong.

However, I cannot but help recognize that "time" is our limiting factor in truly understanding how things "will be" (again...there's that time thing again).  As a scientist, this tells me there is much to "time" that we truly do not understand.  I am still always brought back to "in the fullness of time..."  Maybe modern science, string theory, etc...will help shed a little more light on something (time) that I think we have very little knowledge of.

I have heard it said that the realization of what God is and then His total absence from you is hell. The catechism teaches, as does our holy father, God is Love. To realize true love and then have it removed would surely be a certain hell.

But if no time could be placed on being in the presence, or devoid, of that love, would it lose any of its meaning? In other words, after coming into the presence of God, I know that I will live and be loved by God forever and I will sin no more. As opposed to I have lost favor with God for a time but there is hope that he will forgive me. I believe this realization of time is paramount to the hell or paradise that faces each of us.

The martyred saints cry out, "how long must we wait."

As far as the Bible ... and the Liturgy of the Word:

Why would we want to read the Bible when we could experience God?  Why would we want to hold the Bible when we will KNOW God?

Before I was married to my wife, we were in a long distance relationship.  I looked forward to talking to her on the phone more than anything in the world.  But, now that I am married to her and see her everyday, I hate talking on the phone to her.  I'd rather be there to experience all that she is then talk on the phone.

As far as the Eucharist ... and the Liturgy of the Word:

Why would we want to taste and eat the Tranfigured Host when we can in some way be a part of Jesus himself?

It will be a participation of our very being somehow ...  What specifically do you think it will be?

bhokuto - yes, I have read. I have an understanding of what it will look like. I am more interested in what people think we will do in paradise. Obviously, worship God, but, again, how?

David,

I would say that by reading the accounts of Angels and elders worshipping non-stop is not what we will be doing.  I think for the most part because we are Gods perfect creation and that Christ is the first of our kind that we will live life like on earth but in a perfect environment.  No "crap that broke" or "why can't this thing last."  Honey I have to run to the store and pickup a new tooth brush.  The Sabbath will still be Sabbath.

Our wills will have been perfected and we won't need to have to choose between good and evil because we will have overcome that weed.   Revelations says a New Heaven and a New earth, along with New Jerusalem. Israel is still Israel but a New Israel.  Life is still life but no death and pain.  Invincible like Angels.  Immortal like God. What a joyous life it will be.

Pretend we are in a nightmare at this present time when we wake up will be in Kansas, oops.  We will be in Paradise lost back to what God intended in Genesis.  Back to the real Garden of Eden of things to come. We were delayed because of a kink in the cable called Satan and sin.

When I re-read the Bible I see the outline and a clearer picture of Gods design for heaven.  River running down the center, gold streets, gems and beautiful glitter everywhere in the City.  Absolutely fantastic.

Heaven is a wide open space with Arks and tables and courts. God is heaven.

One account Jesus mentions Mansions prepared for the faithful.  Some folks tend to think we will bowing down every two seconds.  If so we would be Angels. But we are not.  This is crucial to get right away.  This earthly life we endure is but a shadow of things to come in the next phase of life.  What I mean is we will have countries, cities and buildings and dwelling places and such and do things as we do now but without the hassles we endure today.  No headaches.  Our life today gives us the outline or blueprint the world and  these things.  Another account says lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven.  This life got corrupted by sin and Satan. The next life will not have sin nor Satan.

We will worship God with our whole being as was intended, that is to live according to Gods will in love.  To be children of Light.  How happy and pleased God will be no more grief or sorrow, for these things will be removed.

A life of true virtue.

Ok why would Revelations mention, a New earth?  This means we will continue to work and live but in total pleasure without the garbage of sin.

We were created different from the Angels we have to understand that we are not beings like them and our function is not the same as theirs.  We were given something that pissed off Satan and some angels.  That's why they rebelled.  They wanted what we have been given. In an instant Satan received the vision of Man and that didn't go so well with him.

Peace.

interesting. So what do you think about no more marriage? No marriage. No babies. Are we locked in at a certain age for eternity? School, sports, work and recreation will remain the same but without peer pressure and back climbing?
Posted 1 year ago #

"No marriage. No babies."

This is pre-heaven thinking.  Right?  If God created Adam out of dust, if he wants babies, what makes us think we will not have babies?  Or will we be babies?

"Are we locked in at a certain age for eternity?"

Great question!  I have no answer other than ... whatever it is will make perfect sense in God's love.  It would be cool if we could morph as we wanted.  And why couldn't we since we will be with God and beyond time?  Or to be all ages at once?

One of the things I like about our Catholic faith is it can handle mystery.  It uses logic.  It has Canon Law.  There are many doctrines.  But, it still has mystery.  We worship in mystery.  We believe in the Trinity but cannot fully explain it or understand it.  Many non-Catholics cannot handle mystery.  Not that we shouldn't continue to seek and ask and delve ... but some things are not revealed.  Or are they all?

This is pre-heaven thinking.  Right?

yeah - anything is possible with God - I could go for being a baby again for a time...

mystery, yes there is much mystery. and what do we humans do with mysteries?

Here's what Christ says:  men do not marry nor are given in marriage but are as the angels.  heaven was meant to be occupied after all were born.  As the angels in heaven who do not marry no give birth.

Age: 30 or 33 same as Christ. Young strong and good looking for men and beautiful for women.

Here's a better way to look at this:

If sin had not come into the picture here on earth, we would be living and achieving with greater ease.  And Christ would not have come to save us.  We would not require being saved.   We would have transfered direct to heaven. Or God would have transformed everything instantaneously. Or whatever your theory.  This just happens to be what pops out. It is their in black in white. I do by no means say this is exactly and precisely what it is. Just that if sin had not come to us we would still be having children and living till the last man was born.  Basically erase sin from memory and try to imagine a sinless life.  Then once you have removed the nuisance, you can see Gods real plan.  The problem right now is that we have two enemies sin and Satan which distorts everything.  This does not detract from the current salvation plan God has setup to acquiring us back to Himself.  Just what it would have been like if we did not know sin.  So once you see this you can then say God really loves us that much!

Many people who have seen loved ones ( during near death expierences) describe them as looking 'old and young at the same time'

Image looking at a person and rather then seeing them at this or that time in thier life seeing them at every time in there life all at once? What would that look like? Heaven does not have time in the same way we know it here.

Heaven where God is if you read carefully is a stop gap to the next life, a New Jerusalem and a New Earth.  Or a new universe.

1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth. For the first heaven and the first earth was gone, and the sea is now no more.

2 And I John saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.  Revelations 21 Douay Rhiems

New Heaven is more like new universe.
Then St. John states that the New Jerusalem came down from God.

In Genesis God dwelt with Adam and Eve before the great sin.
He dwelt with them through the Holy Spirit while the Father and Son were in Heaven.  but this doesn't make sense? it does if you understand How God is able to be everywhere through the Spirit.  THe Father is the Great abyss called the Mind of God who begot the Son who is the Word.
The Father and the Son were always together.  The Holy Spirit is the dispenser of Gods will who is also God.

A way to more or less conceive this is like this(without sounding heretic trying to make distinction), the Holy Spirit is lesser of the three but is not greater than the three.  The Father says at the baptism of Jesus this is my beloved Son.  The Father mentions or makes reference to the Son, Jesus makes mention or reference to the Paraclete, which we call the Holy Spirit.
Genesis -- Gate of Heaven for access to and fro.  We have this thought it says God cannot be separated, well our idea of separation is quite limited.  One way that God is able to be with us we are temples.  Another is because we have a soul.  This sounds rather redundant.

Scripture:
And I heard a great voice from the throne, saying: Behold the tabernacle of God with men, and he will dwell with them. And they shall be his people; and God himself with them shall be their God.

Shadow of things to come:
The Sun is a pretex to God as light. God will dwell with His people in the Altars as God intended, Genesis is the key.  Read it over and over until is all sinks in the rest the descriptions of Heaven and Man falls into place.
God is so large that He has to stay where He is.
Ok imagine infinite ---no measure endless up, down, sideways, inside all around -- no end in sight any way your eyes peer.

I stand in a handball court and whack the ball it comes back, in the infinite nothing comes back it keeps going, not like pink bunny :)

Our concept of God the Father who begat His Son Jesus is nowhere near what we think.  God is able to do anything in His sandbox.

Single words leap out in the Catholic Faith we have these words that just stick out and like red beads.  Word is key.

See to God heaven is all one He just creates a place for us to dwell because we have bodies.  Everything is in God.  For God is infinite.
When sin entered He had to put up partitions to keep it out.

Peace
