Garret,

Most confirmation candidates read about the saints to help them select a name.

In our parish the RCIA candidates are strongly encouraged to search the internet to read about the lives of canonized saints.  While searching the internet the RCIA candidates often read about a saint who had to overcome a similar struggle in life.  They develop a personal connection with one a saint.  One of the new catechumens read about St. John of God and he connected strongly and chose St. John of God for his patron saint.

At the recent Easter Vigil one of new catechumens chose Blessed Teresa of Calcutta.  Mother Teresa of Calcutta is not yet canonized but she was approved as a patron saint.

I hope this helps in answering your question.  Peace to you.
