Who wrote this? Where did he write it?

“I would rather feel contrition than know how to define it. For what would it profit us to know the whole Bible by heart and the principles of all the philosophers if we live without grace and the love of God?”

Okay - end of quiz - lift your fingers from the kb and know:
The answers are:
Thomas à Kempis; on the very first page of The Imitation of Christ

I personally prefer 'perceive and respond to contrition in me' to 'feel' it. Sometimes, though, I wonder if my contrition is response to sin-guilt or graces meant to stir my contrition. Or, is it the graces that arouse my sin-guilt and drive me to the confessional? Or, does my sin-guilt cause God to bestow the graces? Do you have a thought here?

Warren,

Grace is built on nature, so, I would suggest, one never knows whether grace or nature inspires a person.

However I would imagine it would always be grace that encourages one to go to confession.

I also believe that in your case grace is always uppermost, as you are a grace-filled person.
