In commenting upon Patricia Fagnant-MacArthur’s book review Vocation in Black and White I mentioned that I have ordered this book for my Dominican priest and spiritual advisor, Father Robert Botthof, O.P., may he live forever.

Now, as I noted there, and of a strange thing, I ask you to pray for Fr. Botthof's daughter and her family as she enters breast-cancer surgery and therapy this very week. Yes, Father B. was once married; father of three (now two) children; with four grandchildren; once a Marine and Christian Brother, too; with a long career in education; became widowed and has had a late-life vocation for twenty-five years now among the Order of Preachers. He is active as a part-time associate in my parish though now eighty years old.

So, pray that Father B., his family and you and yours (me and mine, too!) will one day meet at the foot of our Father's throne.

I will remember Fr Botthof in my prayers.

I was away in Rome for some time and on my return I saw your post. By the way, how did your Rome vacation/pilgrimage go?

The Dominicans have a wonderful history of devotion to the Church, Our Lady (the rosary) and scholarship. The first school I went to (from the ages of 5 to 7) was a Dominican school.

Friends here in this Round-table were kind enough to remember my intentions in their prayers, for this I am very grateful. Among my intentions is my younger brother who is dying at present. Please keep up the prayers.

Thank you, Noelfitz.

I am certain that you and yours remain in our own prayers. God be gentle and gracious with you.

And we pray that your brother finds life forever with our Lord and His triumphant.

Warren,

Many thanks for your beautiful post.

My brother died yesterday and will be buried on Tuesday.

I am grateful to the support of all my friends here. You all mean a lot to me.

The nurses and doctors in the hospital were very supportive and sensitive. I especially appreciate the understanding way the pastoral care team helped, particularly Fr Fitzgerald, who led led prayers at the bed-side.

My brother received the sacrament of the anointing of the sick and his family was with him when he passed away.

May he rest in peace.

Oh, Noel, I am so sorry . . .

Words cannot express tears, and even less the glory God holds about each and every one of us from His love.

My heart and spirit are with you.

In all prayer and solace,
Warren Jewell

Death always saddens one. I still remember the loss of my parents and close friends over the years. But one phrase has always helped me weather these moments. I only wish I could remember where I read it at.

The phrase is:

"Look not upon my death as an end, but as a new beginning."
